Garry Kasparov (born Garik Kimovich Weinstein) is a Russian chess grandmaster, writer and pro-democracy activist who was world chess champion from 1985 to 2000. After retiring from top-level competitive chess, he became a prominent critic of Vladimir Putin and later based himself in New York while leading democracy-advocacy efforts including the Renew Democracy Initiative.
