Amartya Sen is an Indian economist and philosopher whose work spans welfare economics, social choice theory, and the study of famines and human development. He won the 1998 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences and holds the Thomas W. Lamont University Professorship at Harvard. India honored him with the Bharat Ratna in 1999.
