Ahead of the re-release, Anil Kapoor told Variety India that he was initially not keen to lead 1942: A Love Story because he felt the role needed a younger actor, and that he suggested Bobby Deol and Aamir Khan. He said the songs already recorded by R.D. Burman changed his mind, because he could not let anyone else lip-sync to them. NDTV carried the same interview, in which Kapoor also praised Manisha Koirala as the emotional thread of the film.

Anil Kapoor has begun shooting for the pan-India action film Dragon in Hyderabad, marking his return to Telugu cinema after 46 years, since his debut in Vamsa Vruksham (1980). NDTV reports he plays Raghuveer Rathod, chief of India's Narcotics Bureau, opposite Jr NTR in Prashanth Neel's film set against the 1960s opium trade. Bollywood Hungama adds that Dragon, which also stars Rukmini Vasanth, releases June 11, 2027.

NH Studioz announced on August 5 that Vidhu Vinod Chopra's 1994 classic 1942: A Love Story, starring Anil Kapoor and Manisha Koirala, re-releases in Indian theatres on August 21. The film returns in restored 8K with a remastered Dolby 5.1 surround mix. ANI reports the restoration was done with L'Immagine Ritrovata in Bologna and Prasad Film Labs in India. Hindustan Times notes the re-release showcases R.D. Burman's final completed soundtrack, including Ek Ladki Ko Dekha and Kuch Na Kaho.
